Photography and birding has become a focus for me lately. I have been exploring the extension of photography into original paintings using watercolour. Here are a few artworks in the Serendipity exhibit at http://www.artdistrictgallery.org until June 19th.
I have artwork online at http://www.artdistrictgallery.org in a new group show “ART!” I also have paintings on exhibit at the biennial Artsu Matsuri exhibit of artwork by Japanese Canadian artists. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto. I was honoured to receive a Bronze award in the 2022 Shodo Canada competition in November.
My artwork focus has been on exploring Japanese art forms such as sumi-e ink paintings, suminagashi ink marbling, shodo Japanese contemporary calligraphy and exploring washi Japanese paper as a substrate for mixed media, silk screen and batik.
Most days I carry my telephoto lens and camera on walks with nature in Waterloo Region. I capture and enjoy my natural surroundings and share my photos on Instagram and Facebook.
The Art District Gallery new exhibit opens August 9th. Here are 2 of my paintings that will be available until October. I created texture with cheesecloth. Something I will teach this fall through Button Factory Arts online.
I am honoured to be accepted into the juried photography show “Viewfindings” at The Link in Waterloo. I enjoy taking photos and post my birding and nature shots on social media but I have rarely taken the care and time to process my photos for printing. Here are my submissions “Take the Plunge Together” and “Your Spirit Soars”. They will be on exhibit until August 2nd.

Painting watercolour on canvas allows for texture to be added to the surface of the painting. I painted these for The Art District Gallery 12 x 12 Plus exhibit opening online November 1st. I am also offering to teach this technique through Button Factory Arts this fall.
A new exhibit at The Art District Gallery. I have revisited my artwork and found that butterflies are a recurring theme for me. The butterfly symbolizes hope, transformation and resilience . In the same thread of revisiting my artwork I transformed a watercolour teaching demo of flowing water using ink. On exhibit at www.artdistrictgallery.org until Sept. 30.
Summer is a time to explore new things. I have been learning how to manipulate paper into lanterns making momigami Japanese paper, chochin structures and paper architecture from Helen Hiebert. Here are my works in progress…
As part of my spring teaching of Watercolour Explorations, I introduced my students to Sumi-e painting with ink and watercolour. Sumi-e is an artform that my mother taught me. It is Japanese ink painting usually done on washi or Japanese mulberry paper. Here are some paintings submitted to the “Strolling Into Summer” exhibit at The Art District Gallery. The exhibit runs June 1-July 31, 2021.
